Suicide: It's No Secret

Wednesday 10th September was World Suicide Prevention Day. The stigma that surrounds suicide is very strong. The grief and pain, very, very real. The ‘Suicide: It’s No Secret’ campaign was launched to provide opportunity for conversation and engagement within society and the church. Into its fourth year the Uniting Church in SA has equipped, supported, raised awareness and engaged with communities and individuals alike around suicide prevention and support.

Scots Church Adelaide has been involved with the campaign from its inception. This year the forecourt was again turned into a hub of activity. The fantastic team of volunteers offered a friendly face and a message of support and encouragement. Fairy floss flowed; brochures, cards, stickers, fliers, balloons and coasters were handed out. All with the same message in mind: we’re all important, and we care! The Piano Man played, ROR drummed, and the Pulteney Street fence was turned into an act of community remembrance with hundreds of yellow ribbons being tied throughout September as a living, active, community memorial. Meanwhile personal messages were written on a “rain-man” memorial board, and candles lit for those known to us inside the church.

During the evening a small number gathered for an intimate and personal time of remembrance and reflection for those lost to suicide. Similar events were held around the state and country, reminding us of that it really is a global issue, and together as humanity we say, ‘we care’.

Many thanks to the wonderful range of volunteers who came out to support the day including: uni students, church members, ROR & QSA, Synod staff, supportive members of the public, as well as the tireless and committed work of Naomi and Deb in the Scots office.
