Happy New Year!

Happy New Year!

This year the Christian Church turns over its calendar on 27th November, Advent Sunday, when the new Christian Year commences. The journey toward Christmas officially begins for the church, although the secular world already has been anticipating Christmas for many weeks. We will celebrate Holy Communion on that day.

The Sunday before Advent, the last of the Sundays after Pentecost, is Christ the King or The Reign of Christ. This serves to sum up the year's observances with the celebration of the all- embracing authority of Jesus the Christ, leading us to reaffirm our discipleship as members of his kingdom, acknowledging his rule of peace and love and committed to work for his justice and peace in the world.

Rev Norah Norris

 Advent and Christmas at Scots

Our annual Service of Lessons and Carols will be held on Sunday, 4th December with music from the Cantabile Singers. The service will include the Empty Christmas Tree, under which the congregation is invited to place gifts suitable for children, for distribution by OARS, a support organisation for prisoners.

The other two Sundays in Advent will focus on different aspects of our preparations for Christmas. In the worship service on 11th December, “Angels? Bah humbug!”, we will look at some of the difficult bits of the Christmas story, while on 18th December we will reflect on our stories about the celebration of Christmas, in “Memories of Christmas.”

The Service of Commissioning for Seymour College students who are participating in a service learning trip to India in 2017 will be held on Wednesday, 7th December.

Advent studies will be held on Wednesday, 30th November and 14th December, starting at 10.15am. Some of our discussions in those studies will be reflected in worship on Sundays 11th and 18th December.

The highlights of December will be the Candlelight Service on Christmas Eve, 24th December at 8.00pm, and the Christmas Day Service, December 25th at 9.30am.

I invite members of the congregation to drop in to the Manse on 11th December, after worship (from 12.30pm on) for lunch (a simple meat and salad affair), or later in the afternoon for coffee.
