New Articles from ScotsNew Articles from Scots

We are mostly awake to the danger of emails from strangers which promise bodily enhancement in some form! A new variety of these has recently been arriving in my InBox. People I've never heard of, are sending me emails with subject lines like this:

No matter how you are dressed, people will know you are blessed.

Another says:

Andrew, God's miracles still happen.

These are still spam. They are either seeking to (allegedly) sell us something, or to trick us into revealing details for identity theft or getting into our bank account etc.

Step One: Do not open, but delete emails from unknown senders.
Step Two: Ifthe email sounds pious, but you don't know the sender, delete unopened.
Step Three: If unsure, go to Step One.

We have youth group with a bunch of 11-14 year olds after church, and eat lunch on the way through. I discovered last Sunday that cheese is not a favourite for some Dinka Sudanese people. Arok abandoned his main course in disgust, ate a few more strawberries, and then reached for the apple and custard rolls. He looked suspiciously at the custard centre. "Oh, no! Is this cheese, too?" After explanation, and a very careful taste test, he decided custard is sort of acceptable!  Read on >>>>

Backing up the computer is like exercise. We all think it's a good idea. We know we should do it regularly, but we often don't. It's only when we are at the doctor that we find out just how much we have lost through our lack of discipline.   A salutary reminder of the needs for backups came to us at Scots recently... There are three ways we could use our website, which I have called Basic, Simple, and Ambitious. It is important to recognise that our website is only a tool. It cannot make us something we are not! It is a mirror to who we are and what we do. So the Basic and Simple web site options I describe below can really only show us as we are... and also show what we are not doing. Perhaps the key task with such web sites, is not to allow our website to indicate by its run down state that we also, are run down!  The Ambitious web site mores beyond being reflective, and seeks to become one of the major tools of a new area of mission. This requires a completely different level of commitment by the congregation.... Read on >>>>

A wired church creatively and judiciously uses the opportunities of modern communication and entertainment technology to live out the gospel of Jesus the Christ.  This is a careful and deliberate definition. As a church we are about living out the gospel, which includes communicating it to others. The technology we use should reflect that calling.   How might we use the explosion of internet, high definition TV and IPods to assist people's living? ... Read on >>>>

A couple of weeks ago the Presbytery of the Central West held its meeting at Parkes. I shared in the responsibility for the opening worship. ... The day before the pres worship I organised to ring Felicity Amery, presently the chairperson of the Northern Synod, and chaplain to one of the gaols in Darwin, just at the time of the worship service. After the worship started (led by a lay person ... essential element of our principles) I told Felicity to start. At that moment I turned up the input on the mixer where I had plugged in the RCA cable from my hands free kit linked to the mobile phone. Her voice was heard over the PA system as she told the presbytery members who she was, where she was at the time (Kununurra - that right Andrew?), and invited us to listen to the scripture readings for the day.... I have love-hate feelings about wireless networking. I'm geeky enough (sad enough, my son would say) that I like to lie in bed browsing my favourite websites on my Pocket PC. Wireless is great for that. But it's dangerous. READ ON >>>

If I drop my Visa card next to the teller machine, the only thing that stops you getting into my bank account, is the four number password (ie pin number.) You have a chance of 1 in 10,000 of getting the correct number by guessing. And my bank gives you three tries and then disables the account. As security it's pretty good!

Anvil Studio is a powerful midi editor. Even in its freeware format it is very helpful for preparing midi format tunes for worship. READ ON

Computers offer a whole new range of music options. Tunes which are saved in music formats such as .midi or .mp3 etc, can be edited to increase or decrease the number of verses, for example. An appropriate music player can be used to increase or decrease the tempo of a tune. It can be transposed to a different key. Enthusiasts may "beef up" the base line in a midi file, or add an introduction to the tune. READ ON

It's rare that a live musican will not be the best option for a congregation. If there is no obvious willing replacement it may be that mentoring and encouragement is all that is needed for another person to take over the musician's role. [Listen...]

Music is a blessing. Good music lifts our souls in worship. Singing sets us free. In a small congregation it is not uncommon to be without a musician. These pages share the experience so far of some of these congregations.  READ ON

We the Uniting Church people of Scots Church on North Terrace are called by God to be a faithful, worshipping community growing in faith, visible and positive, so that we can be channels of God's love through whom others in the community recognise the God who welcomes them.
