The Sun Came Up

The sun came up this morning, Lord.
There is air to breathe.
This amazing, unlikely complexity which is me
is still alive and feels
and knows
and wonders.

Great is your faithfulness, O God.

Even if I have forgotten you
even when I have ignored you
and when I have deliberately disobeyed you
there is still morning and evening another day.
Truly, you are a God slow to anger.

Scripture says ‘Thou knowest me right well.'
I know very little.
The four eggs in the nest at my door
have hatched into little bodies
which could not possibly have fitted into so small a space.
Pink, barely birdlike, almost devoid of down
they grow daily feathers sprouting
blind, beaks gaping trusting food will come.

You have breathed life into this mystery.
The parents fly in with food
even as other young across the world starve and die,
or are abused beyond measure.
And even here, the cat sits behind the glass watching,
wondering
waiting for an opportunity.
If one of these little ones should fall...

I know nothing, Lord except that you are faithful,
for with the pain,
despite the unanswered questions,
and in the face of despair
there is joy.
I am not left desolate
for you touch me.
Thank you God.
