Scots Fellowship

Our July Meeting was attended by a small but nevertheless enthusiastic gathering. It was our annual mid-year “Soup Kitchen” and we all enjoyed a mug of soup to accompany our BYO sandwich. It’s always good that our minister, Peter, and the office staff join us when they can – this time we welcomed Peter and Madeleine. Mary Thomas was Facilitator and Margaret Morey was on Kitchen Duties. Mary used a Devotion on “Encouragement” from a resource published some years ago by Group Life & Education Committee, then a sub-committee of the State Fellowship Committee.

We shared news over lunch, and a short business meeting followed. An acknowledgment for our donation was received from Shalom Christian College in Townsville. We agreed to send $50 (in lieu of affiliation) to UCAF, and donate $50 to the Australian Church Womenn Winifred Kiek Scholarship Fund (Norah Norris, Margaret Morey and Mary Thomas attended their meeting in July). We noted the Adelaide North West Regional Celebration will be hosted by Trinity Alberton and Port Adelaide Fellowship at Trinity UC on the afternoon of Thursday 5th October.

The success of two recent money-raisers – the film morning at the Regal Theatre and “The Price of a Slice” for Frontier Services presented the idea for us to share stories of other fund raisers we have experienced. Mary told of several in Whyalla – their “Spring Fair” (held annually since the 1940s), a Flower Stall the day before Mothers’ Day (still going since 1964) and in the 1960s a memorable “Bridal Parade” and the publication of a Recipe Book – both in 1967. Kath remembered annual Sunday School Concerts at Goodwood – great fun – Margaret organised and published (Australia-wide) a recipe book in aid of Frontier Services, and Norah as a child remembered helping to support Schools Patriotic Fund, and later PFA Talent Quest.

We meet always on the first Thursday in the month, so our next gathering is on the 3rd August – BYO lunch and join us at 12 noon. A warm invitation is extended to members of the congregation as we are delighted and honoured to have our own Schapel Family (Jeffrey and Jeanene) share with us the recent trip to Japan they took with Rosalie Smith.
