The traditional church year starts with Advent, four Sundays before Christmas. Over the following few months, there are quite a few special Sundays and "seasons" – Christmas, Epiphany, Lent, Easter. After Pentecost (May 24 in 2015) and Trinity Sunday (May 31), things slow down a bit. We enter a long period when in the tradition there are no special Sundays. The gospel readings from the lectionary work their way through the Gospel of Mark, the Gospel for this year, with some readings from the Gospel of John. The Epistle readings are from the less well known letters (e.g., Ephesians, James, Hebrews) and many of the Hebrew Bible/Old Testament readings are from the books of history.

At Scots, we celebrate the "Season of Creation" in September. This is a relatively new variation to the lectionary, which focuses on the relationship between God, humans and aspects of the physical world we live in.
