Worship Notes for Refugee and Migrant Sunday – 30th August

Refugee and Migrant Sunday is a celebration of the dignity of people who are refugees and migrants and the contribution they have made to life in Australia. It is observed in thousands of churches of at least fifteen denominations around Australia on the last Sunday in August each year.

In recent years there has been a special focus on this Sunday on asylum seekers and other people who have been forcibly displaced and on the needs and challenges facing people who seek to build new lives here.

Most of us have family stories of migration to Australia, whether it was in recent years or several generations ago. We know the difficulties our families faced as they settled into a new land and how they contributed to their new communities. We all have friends who have come from other lands and we know that their presence enriches our lives. It is never easy to make a new start in a new land, but thousands come to Australia wanting to do just that. On Refugee and Migrant Sunday we both celebrate the contribution that migrants from past days have made in Australia and express our concern about what is happening to people today.
