The Season of Creation
In September, we will be celebrating the Season of Creation. In the Christian tradition, the year is divided into periods which focus on different aspects of our faith, for example, Advent, Christmas, Lent, and Easter. These are called “seasons.” About 20 years ago, a proposal was made to add a new season, The Season of Creation, in which the focus is on God as Creator. The proposal originated in Adelaide and was championed by Norm Habel. The idea caught on and now the Season of Creation is a worldwide phenomenon, crossing denominational boundaries.

Each Sunday in the Season of Creation has a particular aspect of creation associated with it. We are invited to imagine participating in the worship of God with or in fellowship with the particular aspect of Creation that week, just as we might remember our fellowship with refugees, Frontier Services or All Saints at other times of the year. Each week in the Season of Creation, we are recognizing our common unity with creation as we worship the Creator.

The Season begins on September 1 and concludes the Sunday after St Francis of Assisi Day (October 4th.)  Rev Dr Peter Trudinger

Guest Preacher for September: Welcome to Adrian Nipress
Adrian is the International Mission and Transforming Justice Co-ordinator in the Mission Resourcing team. The UCA in SA has six significant partnerships with Christian churches in Asia and Melanesia. Adrian works to build upon our long standing relationships with these churches and others that UCA congregations form, expressing support and solidarity while seeking to be part of God’s mission together.

The Transforming Justice role includes coordinating solidarity with matters relating to Indigenous people’s wellbeing, concern for the environment, issues of power imbalance, equality and safety, and the appropriate sharing of wealth among other things.

 Two Special Themes

Justice and Peace should, of course, be in the thoughts and prayers of Christian worshippers every Sunday, but two Sundays in September have them as special themes.

20th September – International Day of Prayer for Peace
A United Nations resolution in 1982 established “Peace Day” to be observed each year on 21st September as a “global 24-hour spiritual observation for peace… meant to demonstrate the power of prayer and other spiritual practices in promoting peace and preventing violent conflict.” Churches around the world keep 21st September or the Sunday preceding it as International Day of Prayer for Peace. In 2015 the emphasis is on Peace in Palestine/Israel with the theme “God has broken down the dividing walls.” Visit

27th September – Social Justice Sunday
The last Sunday in September is observed by Anglican, Catholic, Uniting and other mainline churches in Australia as Social Justice Sunday. Each year the National Council of Churches in Australia through its Social Justice Network produces resources including articles, discussion topics and worship material on a special theme. Visit
